Why isn't San Diego ranked #1 on this list?

As a native San Diegan I’ve been fortunate to have lived here all of my life and I have this questions for all of us, whether you’re a native or transplant from another city; why isn’t San Diego atop the list of the top 25 fittest cities?

fitnessbythebeachI was sitting at my desk looking at my gym’s class schedule to pick a time to go and workout when the thought of the lastest fittest cities rankings came to mind. I remember that San Diego is always somewhere on the list; so what does it take to be #1?

As I looked into it further I discovered, to my shocking surprise, that it seems San Diego has never topped the list! Can you believe it? I know that there are multiple lists published every year and I have googled the subject and reviewed several lists various years back and have confirmed San Diego’s absense at #1. I’m still trying to pick up my jaw from the floor. As I sit here looking out the window in my office I have observed people engaging in excersise enjoying our city’s perfect weather. See, there goes another couple jogging down the street. How can it be that San Diego, who’s nickname is “America’s Finest City”, didn’t covet the top spot? San Diego is know for it’s beautiful beaches, open spaces, abundance of outdoor sports and activities and of course as close to perfect weather as possible. I’m a real estate agent and my job requires me to travel to different parts of the entire county and everywhere I go I’ll frequently and consistantly see people execising.

If I’m in one of our beach communities, the amount of people being active sky rockets. You name, it beach volleyball, soccer on the beach, jogging, roller bladding, roller skating, skateboarding and of course lest we forget, surfing! I know that the data used to determine the winnners is compiled using a survey that contains questions ranging from exercising habits, eating habits, number of fast food restaurants per sq. mile so and so on. I’m just astounded by the realization that somehow San Diego dosn’t compiled enough points to deserve the uppermost rank.

Well I guess this means that, as a city, we’re all going to have to pitch in a little more when it comes to exercising and eating properly so that we can elevate our fine city’s rank  on these fit cities lists by publications such as Men’s Health, Travel & Leisure, Forbes and USA Today. Come on San Diego, let’s get out there and take advatage of our ideal weather and walk, jog, cycle, surf, etc. ourselves to the pinnacle of “America’s Fittests Cities” lists in 2010.
