What Do You Mean it's Raining in San Diego?
Rain? In San Diego? Those two words aren’t usually in the same sentence but this year they are. As a native of San Diego I can count the years when we got tons of rain and it looks like I’m going to have to add this one to the list. On avarage San Diego gets about 9 inches of rain a year.
That’s not very much rain at all and this is why San Diego technically is a desert. Before we settled the town, which became the city, this was a desert arid area with not much vegetation besides drought resistant plants that had become acclamated to the weather conditions. The vibrant, colorful and lush vegetation we see today is completely in part to San Diego’s importation of water from the Colorado River and other various sources. Our own mountains to the north of the state don’t get enough show fall to adequately provide us with all of the water we need to maintain our own little piece of paradise.
Nowadays whether it’s due to less rain, less sources, price of importation and population increases we’re seeing the city and state imposing mandatory conservation measures that include fines for homeowners, condo/apartment complexes and business found in violation of city ordinances. I’m positive not everyone agrees with the fines and other things in the new city ordinances but I guess it’s part of the price of paradise. The one thing I don’t agree with and I know most people will point out as a source of “Do as I say, not as I do” is the misuse of water by our city and state government. Look around and I’m sure you’ll find examples of watering practices that if performed by a citizen would get him/her fined. So, in closing I say let’s all do our part to ensure that our great city is around for centuries and by “all” I do consider our local and state government part of that. I’d appreciate them doing their part as well.
